The launch of my recent children’s book, Count Dyscalculia, couldn't have gone much better than it did. After almost 2 years of learning a new industry, new illustrator software, new publishing tools and figuring out how they all fit together in a modern world, unlike the one my mother navigated in the 80s when she was illustrating for the likes of Enid Blyton, and all while I backpacked 3 continents with my son — well, it certainly become an adventure. With many triumphs and some real failures along the way to learn from. Seeing my book overcome it all and make the number 1 best sellers list in my category on Amazon made all the blood, sweat and tears totally worth it. But perhaps more exciting than all of that, was the day I came across The Mouse Family That Live By The Brambles, in Yorkshire. The day Gez become known to me.

I soon learned I was not the first to approach Gez. Not even close. But for reason, miracle or divine intervention, I am the lucky duck he picked to create the perfect children’s books that capture the characters living by the brambles, in his not so secret garden. That night, my son and I had Yorkshire puds and a Yorkshire tea to celebrate.
We have many steps ahead of us to get the first of the book series to the cosy and sacred spaces of reading time with the next generation of young people, but if you're not already, I urge you to follow in our journey together through Gez's page, The Mouse Family That Live By The Brambles.
And if you'd like to follow some of the 'behind the scenes' of my illustration process, I'll share some on my portfolio pages on Facebook or Instagram, but I'll offer exclusive content and updates via my spam free email list at the bottom of this page. Simply subscribe.
We're both just thrilled and honoured to be working on this for you all!
They say social scrolling is bad for you. And I generally can't argue that, but I do hold a personal exception for May 29th 2024 when I first made the discovery of such a patient and intuitive photographer and caretaker of wildlife living at the bottom of his garden. As from the moment I found Gez’s page, by serendipitous accident, I fell in love with a small family of mice. From there, I met Blacksox the Fox, and Mr Prickles and Steve the blind hedgehog who Gez built a pathway for so he could get from his home to his food and water bowl, without getting lost and going hungry. Along with many other characters he documents the lives of every day for his audience.
The words wholesome and magical don’t come close to describing what I stumbled across that day. And so I immediately contacted Gez to tell him how inspiring his work was and how much I hoped to write and illustrate children’s books with all the characters and stories so that children could enjoy them for years to come. I’d also love to tell you I had my professional hat atop my head when I pitched this to him, but I didn’t. Instead, I opened with “oh my. I love your page”, before blurting out how much I’d love to collaborate in a children’s book and then signing off on my professional proposal with the words “I’m melting!”. Not exactly a page out of business proposals 101. But something in my childish excitement for the creatures I had found in his magical world resonated with Gez, and a short while after, we picked up the phone to chat.
